Psalm 33:12-22

 

CHRISTIANS AND PATRIOTISM

 

Christianity is at the very heart of Patriotism.

 

(Ps 33:12-22)

 

1.     Our Country Grew Out Of The Gospel Of Jesus

 

(12a “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”)

 

       A.       (Patrick Henry, 1775) An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all that is left us!...  (But) we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides over the destines of nations...  The battle sir, is not to the strong alone... Is life so dear, or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?  Forbid it Almighty God!  I know not what course others may take; but as for me, GIVE ME LIBERTY, OR GIVE ME DEATH.

 

       B.       (Patrick Henry) It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST.  For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.

 

       C.       (Thomas Jefferson) I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus.  I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our Creator.

 

       D.       (James Madison, 1778) We have staked the whole future of our American civilization, not upon the power of government; far from it.  We have staked the future of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government; upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, sustain ourselves according to the moral principles of the 10 Commandments of God.

 


       E.       (John Adams) It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation’s humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence.

 

       F.     (John Adams, 1776) [This day] ought to be commemorated as the DAY OF DELIVERANCE, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.

 

       G.       (Congressional Resolution, 1782) The Congress of the United States recommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all schools.

 

       H.       (John Quincy Adams, 1821) The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the PRINCIPLES OF CHRISTIANITY.

 

       I.       (Calvin Coolidge) The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically UNIVERSAL in our country.

 

2.     Our Military Builds On The Work of Jesus

 

       A.       Jesus won our individual freedom on the Cross of Calvary.

       B.       Jesus inspired our national freedom in the Declaration of Independence.

 

              *       (George Bush, 2003) Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation.  The liberty we prize is not America’s gift to the world; it is God’s gift to humanity

 

              *       John Quincy Adams, 1837) In the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior.  It forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation.  The Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission on Earth [and] laid the cornerstone of human government on the first precepts of Christianity.

 

       C.       Jesus blesses the defense of our freedom by our Armed Forces.

              *       (George Bush)“America will never run... And we will always be grateful that liberty has found such brave defenders.

 

3.     Our Future Depends On Our Faith In Jesus

 

       A.       (John Adams, 1798) We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion... Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

       B.       (John Jay) Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.
