Becoming a Stronger Disciple

(Mark 2:13-17) Once again Jesus went out beside the lake.  A large crowd came to Him, and He began to teach them.  As He walked along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth.  “Follow Me,” Jesus told him and Levi got up and followed Him.  While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” were eating with Him and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him.  When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Him eating with the “sinners” and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: “Why does He eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”  On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

WHERE A DISCIPLE IS FOUND

Jesus finds all disciples in the same place – all disciples begin as sinners!

(Romans 3:23) For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death.

1.                  Jesus WANTS Sinners

(17) On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.  I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

(Luke 19:1–10) Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.  A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.  He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see Him, since Jesus was coming that way.  When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately.  I must stay at your house today.”  So he came down at once and welcomed Him gladly.  All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.’”  But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”  Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.  For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

2.                  Jesus LOVES Sinners

(15-16) While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed Him.  When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Him eating with the “sinners” and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: “Why does He eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”

(Luke 7:36-43, 47-50) Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so He went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.  When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears.  Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.  When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who is touching Him and what kind of woman she is - that she is a sinner.”  Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”  “Tell me, teacher,” he said.  “Two men owed money to a certain moneylender.  One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.  Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both.  Now, which of them will love him more?”  Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.”  “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said...  Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven - for she loved much.  But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”  Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”  The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”  Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

3.                  Jesus CALLS Sinners

A.  Jesus calls sinners to be saints.

(14) As He walked along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth.  “Follow Me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.

       B.   Jesus calls sinners to be disciples.

       C.   Jesus calls sinners to be witnesses.
